Description

  • Course Description

This First Aid at Work course is a practical, non-NZQA workplace first aid training programme designed to equip workers with the essential knowledge and skills to respond to common workplace emergencies. The course focuses on providing immediate first aid assistance, performing basic life support (CPR), and managing critical incidents until professional medical services arrive.

Participants will learn how to assess emergency situations, assist a collapsed person, manage airway obstructions (choking), control life-threatening bleeding, and provide first aid care for burns, fractures, and shock. The course also introduces the safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and provides guidance on recognising and assisting individuals experiencing medical emergencies.

This training is aligned with WorkSafe New Zealand guidance for workplace first aid preparedness and is suitable for workers who need practical first aid awareness and emergency response capability within the workplace.

Duty to have First Aid Compliance
Under the Health and Safety at Work (General Risk and Workplace Management) Regulations 2016 – Section 13, a PCBU must ensure that an adequate number of workers are trained to administer first aid at the workplace.

WorkSafe New Zealand recommends determining the number of trained first aiders based on workplace risks and accessibility to emergency services. For example:

    • A construction company employing eight workers in a high-risk environment may require at least two trained first aiders.
    • A large vineyard located approximately 30 minutes from medical or ambulance services may require two first aiders for every 10 workers.

Having trained first aiders onsite improves emergency readiness and helps workplaces meet their health and safety obligations.
