This training course covers the in-depth requirements set out in Regulation 4.5(3)(a) from the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017. It covers classes 2 and 3, as well as a broad range of other topics contained within the regulations. Certificates are issued upon successful course completion and comes with a 5-year recommended renewal date. Suitable for service stations, hardware retail, commercial kitchens, food preparation facilities, and where LPG is present.

The Regulations state that every worker who uses, handles, stores, or manufactures a hazardous substance in the workplace must receive information, instruction, and training. A worker must be informed of any work involving a hazardous substance and know where to find information about safe handling and storage.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand common industry abbreviations when dealing with dangerous goods.
- Comprehend the importance of legislation, regulators, and enforcers, including HSR, HSNO, and HSWA.
- Recognize the roles of WorkSafe NZ, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and how we got here.
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of the PCBU, Approved Handlers, Competent Persons, Certified Handlers, and most importantly, your own roles and responsibilities at the workplace and when you are considered "Qualified".
- Identify hazardous substances by interpreting their Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Understand the importance and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Identify best practice Hazardous Substances control measures such as having appropriate signage, inventory lists, reports, and compliant hazardous area atmosphere zone plans.
- Follow proper decanting procedures and segregation of incompatible substances.
- Respond effectively in in the event of a spill emergency or a chemical leak with appropriate plans including proper clean-up procedures, escalation protocols, and specific precautions for certain classes of dangerous goods.
Upon completing this course, you will receive:
- A course certificate with a 5-year recommended renewal date. This can be used as confirmation that you have received training and instructions pursuant to Regulation 4.5(3)(a) of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017.
- A copy of our training manual. You can use this to reference what you have learnt.
