Can workers share a respirator?

Respirator Fit Testing

We are often asked if it is possible for staff to share a respirator mask. In case where mask use is spasmodic, this is a perfectly understandable question.

First of all have a look at the video below on care and maintenance of respiratory equipment (RPE) – this is a good training tool and well worth a watch.

Ideally we recommend that each person has their own allocated mask. This is “Best Practice” to ensure that good hygiene standards are in place.

If it is absolutely not possible for each person to have their own mask, respirator wipes should be used to thoroughly clean the mask before it is used by another person. It is not advisable to use alcohol based wipes. While these are great for sanitising, over time alcohol may degrade mask components and reduce their effectiveness as an RPE device.

Based on the work environment and the level of contamination of the mask, regular deep cleaning should be done with warm soapy water (refer to the video).

If you ever have questions about what is the best respirator for the substances you are using, or the environment you will be working in, it always pays to have a chat with those that have experience in this area. There are a wide range of respirators on the market, as well as different pre-filters and filters, it can be confusing to the novice.
