Transporting Dangerous Goods Safely
Dangerous goods have special transport requirements to eliminate or minimise the risk of injuring people or damaging property and the environment.
If you manufacture, pack, consign, or transport dangerous goods, it is crucial to understand these requirements. This is especially important in New Zealand, where many goods need to travel by multiple modes of transport, such as land transport combined with either air or sea transport when moving between the North and South Islands.

IATA CBTA 5-day Initial Training
This course is designed for persons involved in Air Cargo processing and handling of Dangerous Goods, who either have no prior DGR training or who have not updated their training during the past 24 months.
The course fulfills ICAO and IATA training requirements and qualifies you to handle and process dangerous goods for carriage by air for a 24-month period.

IATA CBTA 5-day Initial Training
This course is designed for persons involved in Air Cargo processing and handling of Dangerous Goods, who either have no prior DGR training or who have not updated their training during the past 24 months.
The course fulfills ICAO and IATA training requirements and qualifies you to handle and process dangerous goods for carriage by air for a 24-month period.
IATA CBTA 3-day Recurrent Training
This course is designed for persons who have already gone through the 5-day initial training and requires the mandatory 24 month refresher. You must undergo recurrent DGR training every 24 months on the latest regulations and trends related to the carriage of dangerous goods.
This refresher course provides awareness of the current legal requirements, operational restrictions, packaging instructions, marking, labeling, and documentation regulation for dangerous goods, all in accordance with the current edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations Manual 2023 64th edition.

IATA CBTA 3-day Recurrent Training
This course is designed for persons who have already gone through the 5-day initial training and requires the mandatory 24 month refresher. You must undergo recurrent DGR training every 24 months on the latest regulations and trends related to the carriage of dangerous goods.
This refresher course provides awareness of the current legal requirements, operational restrictions, packaging instructions, marking, labeling, and documentation regulation for dangerous goods, all in accordance with the current edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations Manual 2023 64th edition.

International Maritime Dangerous Goods Training Course (IMDG)
This course is an overview designed to provide you with the tools and knowledge to perform your daily tasks in relation to moving and handling dangerous goods by sea. In addition, it is Best Practice to also access and understand your organisations specific procedures for storing and handling Dangerous Goods. This can be covered in more detail with on-site training.

International Maritime Dangerous Goods Training Course (IMDG)
This course is an overview designed to provide you with the tools and knowledge to perform your daily tasks in relation to moving and handling dangerous goods by sea. In addition, it is Best Practice to also access and understand your organisations specific procedures for storing and handling Dangerous Goods. This can be covered in more detail with on-site training.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Apply the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Regulations correctly
- Identify your responsibilities with regards to the transport of Dangerous Goods.
- Be aware of the nine hazard classes of dangerous goods.
- Apply the List of dangerous goods.
- Apply correct segregation of loaded Dangerous Goods sea freight.
- Properly mark and label dangerous goods.
- Complete the required documentation.
- Follow the general emergency procedures when a damaged/leaking package is discovered.
- Report incidents/accidents/occurrences and mis-declarations of dangerous goods.
Prerequisites:
- Each participant is required to bring photographic identification (e.g. a passport or driver’s licence or 18+ Card) for proof of ID.
- Please arrive before or at the course time for a prompt start – late arrivals after the course time will be unable to attend on the day and required to re book later
- No pre-course study is required, participants will receive a Dangerous goods Sea Resource on the day.
- After successful completion of this course, participants will receive an IVS Training Certificate.
- Please note: If English is not the participant’s first language, a basic understanding of written or oral English is required. This will help with participation during the course and sitting the assessment at the end. If your organisation has any concerns about this, please contact IVS to discuss alternative options.
- Catering (coffee & tea upon arrival, morning, or afternoon tea) is provided on the day.

This course has been designed for loaders, warehouse staff and office staff. The purpose of this course is to provide you with the skills and knowledge required to safely handle, load and store dangerous goods and to give you an understanding of the different classes of dangerous goods and their hazards, along with your health and safety obligations when handling dangerous goods at your workplace.
At the completion of this course you will be able to:
- Identify the responsibilities of everybody involved in the handling of Dangerous Goods.
- Provide knowledge and understanding of legislation around the handling of Dangerous Goods.
- Identify risks to people, equipment and the environment when using Dangerous Goods.
- Understand the documentation and declaration requirements relating to transport of Dangerous Goods.
- Identify Dangerous Goods in Limited Quantities (DGLQ) the packaging, markings and labelling requirements.
- Demonstrate the segregation procedures.
- Explain placarding and how and when it is used.
- Understand how to use the emergency response information.
NOTE: This course does not provide training for the Dangerous Goods (D) Endorsement or Hazardous Substance under Regulation 4.5 for Workplace Chemical Handling Training Basic or Comprehensive, and Certified Handlers Compliance Certification.
